HLTAID012 enhances core first aid skills with a focus on the specific needs of children in education and care environments. This course prepares you to confidently respond to emergencies involving infants and young children. Here’s what you’ll cover:

Emergency Response in Childcare:

  • Master the DRSABCD protocol for assessing emergencies in childcare settings, prioritizing safety for yourself, children, and bystanders.
  • Recognize the need for first aid intervention specific to children’s physiology.

Pediatric First Aid:

  • Gain expertise in essential first aid skills for common childhood emergencies, including:
  • Febrile convulsions (fevers with seizures)
  • Management of asthma and anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions)
  • Bleeding control
  • Choking incidents
  • Burns
  • Other childhood injuries and illnesses

AED Use for Children:

Develop confidence in using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on infants and children according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Effective Communication:

Practice clear communication to report incident details to emergency services and document them as required by childcare center procedures.

Confidentiality and Privacy:

Understand the importance of protecting children’s information by maintaining confidentiality throughout the process.

Psychological Considerations:

  • Recognize the potential emotional impact of emergencies on yourself, children, and families involved.
  • Learn strategies to manage stress and provide support after a critical event.
